Writing Workshop in Nevada City

Writing Workshop:
Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction

Are you ready to take your writing to the next level?

Whether you’re idling at a standstill or driving great guns with an existing project, this class will add fuel to fire your passions and expand your skills.

In this five-week workshop, you’ll write new material, either related to an existing project or the start of a fresh one. Discover new ways to edit –where the writing deepens and comes more fully alive. Find what is already working and shed what detracts from the nugget of the piece. Refine and tighten sentences so that the essence of what is lurking in the text can shine.

We’ll work with craft which is to writing what scales are to music – and so much more. Awareness of craft fills your tool bag and hones your ability to become a better writer.

Essential craft elements to be considered:

  • Style and Voice
  • Dialogue
  • Scene and Setting
  • Telling vs. Showing
  • Characterization
  • Passive vs. Active
  • Conflict and Tension
  • Language: Clichés, the Obvious, Point-of-view and Ready-made sentences

Ann Keeling is completing her MFA in Creative Writing at Goddard College, graduating in July 2010.  She is an editor and personal writing coach who has taught at universities and high schools.
